New Delhi: Recent research suggests caution in relying solely on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, to assess a child’s developmental progress, particularly in detecting potential delays. Despite the increasing integration of AI chatbots like ChatGPT into the healthcare sector, it remains evident that these technologies are still in their nascent stages and may not consistently provide accurate evaluations.
In a comprehensive study analyzing 108 distinct developmental concerns in children up to five years old, it was observed that ChatGPT demonstrated a lower level of concern compared to pediatricians in approximately 36% of potential developmental delay cases.
Joseph G. Barile, a research assistant at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in the US, highlighted the findings, stating, “This study underscores the greater confidence pediatricians exhibit compared to ChatGPT in identifying specific developmental delays as abnormal.”
Although ChatGPT expressed higher concern than physicians in merely 5% of cases, pediatricians identified approximately 30% more potential developmental delays than the AI chatbot. Notably, ChatGPT and pediatricians reached differing conclusions regarding the abnormality of potential delays in 41% of cases overall.
The study further delineated that discrepancies between ChatGPT and pediatricians were particularly pronounced in assessments of social, emotional, and behavioral concerns as opposed to physical ones, particularly in children older than one year.
