Rishi Sunak Meets PM Modi in New Delhi, Discusses Strengthening India-UK Ties

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, along with his family, met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. The meeting was marked by a warm exchange between the two leaders, during which they discussed a wide range of subjects. Prime Minister Modi took to social media to express his delight, stating, “It was a delight to meet former UK PM, Mr. Rishi Sunak and his family! We had a wonderful conversation on many subjects. Mr. Sunak is a great friend of India and is passionate about even stronger India-UK ties.”
Sunak’s visit also included a meeting with Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman. The discussion focused on exploring new avenues to strengthen market-based financial ties and fostering economic growth. Sitharaman emphasized leveraging the Commonwealth to bring issues of mutual interest to the G7 agenda, with a particular focus on benefiting the Global South.
Earlier in the day, Sunak and his family visited the Parliament House, where they were warmly received by Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, Utpal Kumar Singh, and Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, P.C. Mody. During their visit, the Sunak family explored the Parliament House Complex, admiring its historical significance and architectural grandeur, including notable sites like the Galleries, Chambers, and Samvidhan Sadan.
Rishi Sunak, accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty and daughters Krishna and Anoushka, also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday. Jaishankar posted on social media, “Nice to meet former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Delhi today. Appreciate his constant support for strengthening India-UK relations.”
Born to Indian parents in Southampton, with roots in Punjab, Sunak made history as the first Indian-origin person to serve as the UK Prime Minister from 2022 to 2024. Throughout his tenure, Sunak maintained a strong commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between India and the UK, calling India an “indispensable partner” in all areas of cooperation.
Sunak’s visit is part of his ongoing engagements in India, with the family also visiting the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra just a few days ago on February 15, 2025.
