Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Protests Over Rejection of Notices for Adani, Manipur, and Sambhal Discussions
New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Friday after opposition MPs protested the rejection of adjournment notices, which had sought discussions on serious issues, including allegations against the Adani Group, violence in Manipur, and unrest in Sambhal. The House will reconvene on Monday.
The disruption began after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced the rejection of 17 notices under Rule 267 of the House, which had been submitted by opposition MPs to address the issues. Expressing his disapproval, Dhankhar remarked that Rule 267 was being “weaponised” as a tool for disruption rather than constructive debate, calling for reflection from the MPs. His comments were met with protests, particularly from Congress members.
Despite the protests, the Chairman proceeded to adjourn the proceedings, citing that similar issues had been raised repeatedly in the past days, causing a loss of productive time. This marked the fourth consecutive day of the ongoing Winter Session in which the House failed to conduct any substantial business.
The opposition’s notices aimed to discuss various pressing matters, including corruption allegations against the Adani Group, communal violence in Sambhal, and ethnic tensions in Manipur, which have all been subjects of growing concern.
