Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident that claimed eight lives — including the groom — in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district. The victims, all part of a wedding party, lost their lives when their vehicle crashed on Friday evening.
In a message shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on X, Modi said:
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon.”
He also announced ex-gratia financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of the deceased, and ₹50,000 for those injured.
The accident occurred in the Junawai Police Station area of Sambhal. According to police reports, a Bolero SUV carrying members of a wedding procession was speeding when the driver lost control and crashed into the wall of Janata Inter College in Junawai village. The impact was so intense that the vehicle overturned, killing five people instantly — including the groom.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and five others who sustained critical injuries were immediately referred to Aligarh for medical treatment. Unfortunately, three of them — identified as Ravi, Komal, and Madhu — succumbed to their injuries en route, raising the death toll to eight. The remaining two injured victims are currently being treated at Aligarh Medical College. All the victims hailed from Hargovindpur village within Junawai police limits and were traveling to Bilsi in Budaun district to attend a wedding function.
Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Vishnoi and Additional SP Anukriti Sharma visited the site soon after the incident. Rescue operations were challenging, as the vehicle was completely mangled and had to be cut open using a JCB machine to extract those trapped inside.
What should have been a joyous celebration turned into a devastating tragedy, leaving families and the local community in shock and mourning. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident, with early reports pointing to high speed as a major factor.
