Mumbai Court Sentences Sanjay Raut to 15 Days Imprisonment in Defamation Case
Mumbai: In a significant legal development, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has been sentenced to 15 days of simple imprisonment by a Mumbai court in a defamation case brought against him by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
On September 26, the metropolitan magistrate of Sewree court convicted Raut under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to punishment for defamation. In addition to the prison term, he was also fined Rs 25,000.
The defamation complaint alleged that Raut made unfounded and damaging statements regarding Medha and Kirit Somaiya, claiming their involvement in a Rs 100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets overseen by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
Medha Somaiya contended that Raut’s remarks were not only baseless but aimed at tarnishing their reputation in the public eye. Her complaint emphasized the harmful impact of Raut’s statements, asserting that they were designed to malign her character.
This case highlights the ongoing tensions between political factions in Maharashtra and raises questions about the limits of political discourse in public forums.
