Saudi Arabia to Participate in 46th World Heritage Committee Session in New Delhi
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will play an active role in the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from July 21 to July 31, 2024. This marks the first time India will host this prestigious event, highlighting its rich cultural and natural heritage on an international stage.
The session will convene UNESCO officials and representatives from 195 member states that have ratified the World Heritage Convention of 1972. Saudi Arabia will be represented by the Saudi National Committee for Education, Culture and Science, as well as the Kingdom’s permanent delegation to UNESCO and the Heritage Commission, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Saudi Arabia’s participation is significant as it aims to strengthen its presence in international heritage discussions. A key focus will be on promoting its cultural sites, notably the Cultural Landscape of Al-Faw, which is under consideration for inclusion on the World Heritage List.
During the session, the World Heritage Committee will review proposals to add 27 new sites from around the globe to the World Heritage List. Additionally, it will assess the preservation status of 124 existing sites, including 56 categorized as being in danger.
The World Heritage Committee, comprised of representatives from 21 elected countries, is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
