PV Sindhu Ruled Out of Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships Due to Hamstring Injury

India’s two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will not be part of the country’s squad for the upcoming Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships (BAMTC) 2025, which is scheduled to take place in Qingdao, China, from February 11-16. Sindhu revealed on social media that she sustained a hamstring injury during her training session in Guwahati on February 4. Despite efforts to push through the pain with heavy taping, an MRI indicated that her recovery would take longer than initially anticipated.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share I won’t be traveling with the team for BAMTC 2025,” Sindhu wrote on X. “While training on the 4th in Guwahati, I felt a twinge in my hamstring. Despite my efforts to push through with heavy taping for our country, an MRI has revealed that my recovery will take slightly longer than I initially expected.”

Sindhu, who was an integral part of India’s bronze-medal-winning team at the 2023 BAMTC, was expected to lead the women’s singles charge again this year. However, with the injury, she will miss the prestigious tournament. “Wishing the team all the very best. I will be cheering from the sidelines,” she added.

The absence of Sindhu leaves a significant gap in India’s squad, and the responsibility for the women’s singles category now likely falls to Malvika Bansod, currently India’s No. 2 ranked player. It remains uncertain whether a replacement will be named for Sindhu.

India is placed in Group D of BAMTC 2025, alongside South Korea, the 2023 runners-up, and Macau. India will begin their campaign against Macau on February 12, followed by a crucial match against South Korea on February 13 at the Conson Gymnasium in Qingdao.

The Indian squad for BAMTC 2025: Men: Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Dhruv Kapila, MR Arjun, Sathish Kumar K.
Women: PV Sindhu (ruled out), Malvika Bansod, Gayatri Gopichand, Treesa Jolly, Ashwini Ponnappa, Tanisha Crasto, Adya Variyath.
