World No. 1 Jannik Sinner powered into the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships for the fourth consecutive year with a commanding 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 win over an injured Pedro Martinez on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Italian continued his flawless form at this year’s tournament, dropping just 17 games en route to the fourth round — a feat that matches the Open Era record held by Jan Kodes in 1972 for the fewest games lost before the round of 16 in men’s singles.
Sinner has also yet to drop serve at Wimbledon 2025, having won all 37 of his service games and saved all eight break points faced — underlining his clinical dominance.
Martinez Hampered by Shoulder Injury
Sinner raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before Martinez called a medical timeout to receive treatment on his right shoulder. The Spaniard, visibly hampered, struggled to generate pace, with his first serves barely crossing the 80 mph mark — making him an easy target for the Italian’s aggressive return game.
“I’m very happy to be in the second week, but I think we all saw he was struggling with the shoulder,” Sinner acknowledged after the match. “On this surface, if you can’t serve well, it’s not easy. But full credit to him for coming out and competing.”
Bulletproof Under Pressure
Despite a spirited effort from Martinez in the second set — where he produced a more free-hitting game and created four break point opportunities in the eighth game — Sinner absorbed the pressure with ease. He saved all four break points through a blend of relentless groundstrokes and precise serving, regaining full control and sealing the match in just 1 hour and 55 minutes.
Record-Breaking Streak for Italy
With his 17th appearance in the fourth round of a Grand Slam, Sinner now holds the all-time Italian record, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli’s previous mark of 16. Next up, the reigning Australian Open champion faces Grigor Dimitrov, who advanced past Sebastian Ofner with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(0) win.
Sinner, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2023 before falling to Novak Djokovic, is eyeing his first title at the All England Club and a fourth Grand Slam crown overall.
