Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the national capital on Sunday night due to a stomach-related ailment. The hospital confirmed in a statement on Monday that the 78-year-old leader is now in a stable condition and is being monitored closely by a team of specialists.
“Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital at 9:00 PM on Sunday (June 15) under the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology for a stomach-related issue. She is currently stable and under observation,” said Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Management.
Gandhi, a Rajya Sabha MP and former Congress president, is under the care of the Gastroenterology Department, and doctors have assured that her condition is being managed with close attention.
This is her second hospital visit in June. Earlier this month, on June 7, she was taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla after experiencing restlessness. Medical tests, including an MRI, were conducted. At the time, doctors reported that her blood pressure was slightly elevated, but she remained stable. According to Naresh Chauhan, principal media advisor to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, her visit was largely precautionary.
Chief Minister Sukhu, upon learning of Gandhi’s condition, immediately cut short his visit to Una and returned to Shimla to enquire after her health — a gesture that underlines the Congress veteran’s enduring stature in the party.
This is not the first instance of Sonia Gandhi facing gastrointestinal issues. In February this year, she was briefly hospitalised at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for similar concerns. Additionally, in September 2022, she traveled to the United States for a medical evaluation that had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that trip, she was accompanied by her son and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The 2022 US visit also led her to miss a significant portion of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, though not before she initiated key organisational changes within the Congress party.
The Congress party has yet to release an official update, but leaders and well-wishers continue to extend support and prayers for her recovery. The earlier update on her US medical visit was shared by party leader Randeep Surjewala, who had thanked the public for their concern and goodwill. As of now, Sonia Gandhi remains under observation and is expected to remain at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for further evaluation.
