South Africa Condemns Israeli Strikes on Iran, Urges Diplomatic De-escalation
The South African government has strongly condemned Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, warning of serious ramifications for regional stability, international law, and nuclear safety. The call comes as global concern mounts following Israel’s coordinated attacks on June 13, which reportedly targeted military sites, nuclear facilities, and civilian infrastructure across Iran.

In a statement released late Friday, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) expressed “profound concern” over the loss of life and potential violation of international norms.

“South Africa expresses profound concern regarding the attacks conducted by Israel on targets within Iran… Reports of civilian casualties, alongside military personnel, are deeply troubling,” the statement read.

DIRCO emphasized that the strikes raise serious legal and ethical concerns, citing potential breaches of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the protection of civilians under the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.

Nuclear Safety in Focus
One of South Africa’s primary concerns is the targeting of nuclear-related facilities, which the country says could pose a grave threat to international security. The department noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had previously passed a resolution condemning any attacks on peaceful nuclear infrastructure, deeming such actions violations of the UN Charter and international legal standards.

“The implications for nuclear safety and security are particularly alarming,” DIRCO warned.

Call for Diplomacy and Restraint
South Africa extended its condolences to the Iranian government and to the families of those affected, reaffirming its commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

“South Africa urges maximum restraint by all parties and calls for the urgent intensification of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the Middle East,” the statement continued. DIRCO also expressed support for ongoing diplomatic dialogues, particularly between the United States and Iran, and reiterated its longstanding advocacy for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in the Middle East.
