“A Balanced Force”: Keshav Maharaj Hails South Africa’s Bowling Attack Ahead of WTC Final Against Australia
As South Africa prepares to face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final on Wednesday in London, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj praised the variety and balance in the Proteas’ bowling unit, calling it one of the best combinations the team has had in years.
The Proteas’ formidable attack features Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, and Maharaj himself—who is just two wickets away from joining the elite 200-wicket club in Test cricket.
Speaking on JioCinema, Maharaj said,
“The variety in our bowling attack really complements each other. We’ve got height, pace, swing, aggression, and still maintain control. It’s probably one of the most balanced attacks we’ve had in a long time.”
He highlighted how the team has successfully navigated a transitional phase following the retirement of legendary bowlers, arriving at a combination that has now become a cornerstone of their success.“It’s been a collective effort across different conditions — and that’s what makes this group special.”
The Intensity of Test Cricket
Maharaj also reflected on the unique challenges of Test cricket, emphasizing the unmatched intensity and mental endurance it demands.
“Test cricket is a true test of both skill and character. You might win one day, but it’s the next four that matter. It’s physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting — and that’s what makes it so special.”South Africa, led by Temba Bavuma, has had a stellar WTC cycle, winning seven of their last eight Tests to qualify for their maiden WTC final. The team’s consistent performances across formats have made them a formidable presence in ICC events.
Though the Proteas have not won an ICC trophy since their 1998 Champions Trophy triumph, they’ve come close multiple times in recent years, finishing runners-up in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and reaching the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, Australia, the defending champions, will aim to become the first team to win consecutive WTC titles since the format’s inception in 2019.
