Amazon Prime India to Introduce Ads from June 17, Offers Ad-Free Upgrade for a Fee
Amazon Prime Video is set to roll out a major change for its Indian subscribers—starting June 17, the streaming giant will begin inserting advertisements during movies and TV shows. This move brings an end to Prime Video’s long-standing ad-free viewing experience and is aimed at opening up a new revenue stream through advertising.
The company stated that revenue from ads will be reinvested into developing more high-quality and diverse content, promising users a richer library in the long term. However, for viewers who prefer an uninterrupted streaming experience, Amazon is offering an alternative.
A new ad-free upgrade will be available as an optional add-on to existing Prime memberships. The additional subscription will cost ₹129 per month or ₹699 annually—on top of the standard Amazon Prime fee of ₹1,499 per year.
While the upgraded plan hasn’t yet been listed on Amazon’s official website, users have started receiving emails detailing the upcoming changes. The platform also emphasized that even with ads, it aims to keep them minimal—”fewer than traditional TV and other streaming services,” according to the official communication.
This change aligns Prime Video with other global streaming platforms that have adopted ad-supported models to diversify revenue without significantly raising base subscription prices. The coming weeks will reveal how Indian users react to this shift—whether they opt for the ad-free tier or adapt to a mixed viewing model.
