A spokesperson for the veteran director issued a statement late on Saturday, assuring the public that Ghai is “absolutely fine” and is under medical observation for regular monitoring.
“We would like to confirm that Mr. Subhash Ghai is absolutely fine. He has been admitted for a routine check-up and is doing well. Thank you all for your love and concern,” the statement read.
Earlier, the hospital had shared details about Ghai’s medical history, revealing that he has a history of ischemic heart disease, with previous surgeries including an aortic valve replacement (AVR) in 2009, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in 2011, and a pacemaker insertion in the same year. Ghai was also recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the care of Dr. Rohit Deshpande.
Subhash Ghai, widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s most influential filmmakers, began his career in the film industry as an actor. Though he appeared in small roles in films like Taqdeer and Aaradhna, it was his transition to directing that marked the turning point in his career. Ghai is best known for his iconic films such as Kalicharan, Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Khalnayak, Pardes, and Taal, among others.
In 2006, Ghai’s contribution to cinema was recognized with a National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues for producing the critically acclaimed social problem film Iqbal. That same year, he also founded Whistling Woods International, a prominent film and media institution in Mumbai, which has since become a key educational hub for aspiring filmmakers.
Recently, Ghai attended the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where he launched his memoir, Karma’s Child: The Story of Indian Cinema’s Ultimate Showman. The festival also saw the screening of his celebrated musical Taal.
His most recent project was the 2022 comedy-drama streaming film 36 Farmhouse, for which he served as producer and writer. Despite being a prominent figure in the industry for decades, Ghai continues to contribute to both the creative and educational spheres of Indian cinema.
