Supreme Court Refuses to Cancel NEET-UG 2024 Amid Paper Leak Concerns, Issues Reforms Directions
In a significant ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court of India decided not to annul the NEET-UG 2024 examination despite concerns over a paper leak, stating there was no systemic breach affecting the exam’s integrity. The decision, announced on July 23, was made by a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
The court criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) for its inconsistent handling of the exam process and directed the agency to cease its erratic practices, which have been detrimental to student interests. The bench has expanded the role of the Centre-appointed panel, led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, to review the NTA’s operations and suggest necessary reforms.
The expanded mandate for the Radhakrishnan panel includes submitting a report by September 30, addressing various issues within the examination system and recommending measures to address any deficiencies. The panel is also tasked with developing a standard operating procedure to integrate technological advancements for strengthening the examination process.
The Supreme Court’s decision comes as a relief to the NTA and the NDA government, who faced severe criticism and protests over alleged irregularities, including paper leaks, fraud, and impersonation in the NEET-UG held on May 5. With over 23 lakh students participating in the test for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other courses, the court’s ruling underscores the need for procedural reforms rather than a cancellation of the exam.
