Vijay to Launch Statewide Tour for Tamilaga Vettri Katchi Ahead of 2026 Elections
Chennai: Tamil superstar Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Katchi (TVK) party, is set to embark on a statewide tour starting December 2, aiming to connect directly with the public across Tamil Nadu in preparation for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. The tour will kick off in Coimbatore and conclude on December 27 with a major public rally in Tirunelveli.
In a recent public meeting, Vijay announced that TVK intends to contest all 231 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, marking a significant political ambition since the party’s launch in February 2024. Notably, TVK has chosen to forgo participation in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, focusing instead on solidifying its presence for the state assembly polls.
Party insiders revealed plans for Vijay to appoint district-level office bearers and booth committee heads shortly, while also recognizing leaders who played pivotal roles in the party’s successful public rally in Vikravandi, which attracted over 300,000 attendees on October 27.
Veteran actor Rajinikanth commended Vijay’s political debut, describing his first major public meeting as well-organized. Speaking to the media during Diwali celebrations, Rajinikanth congratulated Vijay, stating, “He conducted the conference very successfully. My greetings to him.” However, he chose not to address certain allegations made by TVK leaders during the rally.
Vijay’s entry into politics is particularly noteworthy, as he is the first major Tamil film star to make such a move since the late M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), founder of AIADMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. His political venture is anticipated to reshape the state’s political landscape, reflecting a growing trend of cinema personalities engaging in politics.
Rajinikanth himself had previously expressed intentions to enter politics, aiming to contest the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, but later decided against it, opting to keep his fan club, Rajini Makkal Mandram (RMM), as a charitable organization. As Vijay prepares for his tour, all eyes will be on how his political journey unfolds in the coming months.
