Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Announces Measures to Support Government Schools and Teachers
Hyderabad: On Friday, August 2, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced a series of new initiatives aimed at enhancing support for government schools and their staff. Speaking at the “Aatmeeya Sammelan” held at LB Stadium, Hyderabad, CM Reddy revealed that the state government will fully cover the electricity bills for all government schools. Additionally, women’s self-help groups (SHGs) will be engaged to manage and compensate sanitation workers and sweepers in these schools, relieving teachers from the financial burden of these expenses.
Addressing the gathering of government school teachers who had recently been promoted, Reddy emphasized the importance of their role in educating children from poorer and marginalized backgrounds. He expressed concern over the decline in government school enrollments by 2 lakh this year, noting that while 26 lakh students are enrolled in 30,000 government schools, 33 lakh students attend private schools, despite the higher qualifications of government school teachers.
Reddy attributed this disparity to previous governments’ failure to provide adequate facilities and infrastructure in government schools. In response, the current administration has proposed a significant increase in the education budget, with a proposed allocation of ₹21,000 crore, which represents 7.3% of the total budget. While the initial goal was to allocate 10% of the budget to education, adjustments were made to fulfill various other promises.
Looking ahead, Reddy outlined plans to construct stadiums in every mandal headquarters to promote sports among children. He also announced a policy to reward youth who excel in sports with cash prizes and job opportunities. He assured that all issues concerning government school teachers would be addressed and expressed a commitment to listening to their concerns.
Reddy noted that approximately 25,000 government school teachers have been promoted after nine years, and including promotions for Gurukul teachers, this number could rise to 30,000. He criticized the previous BRS government for deteriorating the condition of government employees and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving their welfare.
