Trump Threatens Sanctions Against Russia, Calls for Ceasefire and Settlement with Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Russia, threatening large-scale banking sanctions, tariffs, and other measures until a ceasefire and final settlement are reached in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Trump’s statement, made via his social media platform Truth Social on Friday, emphasized his concern over the escalating violence in Ukraine, urging both Russia and Ukraine to negotiate a peaceful resolution.
“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale banking sanctions, sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and final settlement agreement on peace is reached,” Trump wrote. “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late.”
This comes after a recent wave of Russian aerial bombings on Ukraine, with 67 missiles and 194 drones targeting the country, though many were intercepted. However, some did cause damage, hitting critical infrastructure like gas and power facilities.
Trump’s remarks are his first strong warning to Russia, as he continues to position himself as a potential peacemaker. During his 2024 election campaign, Trump had boldly claimed the war would end immediately if he were in office, and suggested that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine under his presidency. While his past claims remain speculative, his current threat of sanctions reflects his belief that the war could come to an end with decisive US intervention.
In recent developments, President Trump had temporarily halted all US aid to Ukraine following a heated exchange with President Volodymyr Zelensky at an Oval Office meeting. This decision led to a pause in even intelligence exchanges between the US and Ukraine. However, after receiving a letter of “regret” from Ukraine, Trump has expressed readiness to work with Zelensky towards securing a peaceful agreement.
As part of the ongoing diplomatic efforts, officials from both sides are scheduled to meet next week for talks. These discussions will also explore a potential US-Ukraine agreement that would grant the US access to Ukraine’s vast reserves of rare earth minerals, further complicating the global dynamics surrounding the war.
