TVK Holds First General Council Meeting, Demands Key Resolutions and Social Reforms
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, convened its first-ever general council meeting in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, on Friday. The event was attended by over 2,000 party members and saw the adoption of 17 significant resolutions addressing key state and national issues.
One of the central demands made by TVK was the immediate withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill. The party argued that while the Bill was intended to ensure transparency in the management of Waqf properties, it would ultimately undermine the rights of the Muslim community and could impose additional restrictions on them.
Another major resolution was the demand to continue the bilingual policy, with TVK strongly opposing the Centre’s proposed three-language policy. The party expressed its support for the preservation of Tamil and its cultural identity.
The meeting also highlighted the TVK’s dedication to the welfare of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen. The party called for the Union government to take immediate action and find a permanent solution to the ongoing issues faced by the fishing community, especially due to frequent attacks and killings by the Sri Lankan Navy.
In a bid to address local governance concerns, TVK pushed for decentralisation of power and the allocation of greater autonomy to state governments. Additionally, the party raised its voice against the proposed construction of a new airport in Parandur, citing environmental and displacement concerns.
TVK also demanded the establishment of special fast-track courts to handle cases of sexual assault and expedite justice for victims. The party further condemned the DMK-led state government’s handling of law and order issues and called for an investigation into the Rs 1,000 crore scam involving TASMAC, the state-run liquor distribution chain.
Supporting social justice, TVK advocated for a caste-wise Census to ensure fair representation for all communities in the state. The party also reiterated its commitment to protecting employees, teachers, and workers from unfulfilled promises made by the government.
In keeping with its legacy of social reform, the party proposed naming the upcoming international convention centre on East Coast Road in Chennai after the revered social reformer Periyar. TVK also reaffirmed its unwavering support for a lasting solution to the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, endorsing the idea of a referendum as a democratic approach.
TVK’s resolutions were not just focused on political and social issues, but also on governance reforms. The party declared its full support for Vijay’s leadership, granting him the authority to steer the party’s future direction. While TVK chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it confirmed its plans to actively participate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Vijay emphasized that TVK would only align with parties that accepted his leadership, signaling his ambition to be a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post in 2026.
