Cairo: An official from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza emphasized the urgent need for sufficient food aid to prevent famine among residents of the besieged Palestinian enclave.
In a live interview with Egypt’s state-linked Al-Qahera News television network on Sunday, Inas Hamdan, UNRWA’s acting public information officer in Gaza, highlighted the escalating humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
“There is no safe zone within Gaza, and the situation continues to grow more dire,” stated Hamdan. She noted overcrowded conditions at shelter centers in Khan Younis and central Gaza, where Palestinians from Rafah, the southernmost city in the enclave, seek refuge amid ongoing Israeli attacks. “Each center is accommodating approximately 16,000 individuals,” she added.
Hamdan underscored UNRWA’s efforts to deliver health services and distribute food supplies to the shelters, stressing the critical necessity for adequate food aid to avert famine, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has launched a significant offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, prompted by a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel that resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities.
According to Gaza health authorities, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least 36,439 Palestinians and left over 82,627 others injured.
