Rahul Gandhi Urges Wayanad to Elect Priyanka as “Official MP” in By-Poll
Wayanad: In a heartfelt appeal to the voters of Wayanad, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized the unique status of the constituency, stating it is the only one in the country with two members in Parliament—himself as the “unofficial MP” and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, as the candidate for the “official MP” position. Speaking at a public meeting in Kalpetta on October 23, Rahul urged the community to support Priyanka as she makes her electoral debut.
Rahul, who represented Wayanad from 2019 to 2024, expressed gratitude for the support he received from the locals during his tenure and appealed to them to extend that same care to Priyanka. He underscored the bond he shares with the people, referencing a personal token—a Rakhi made by Priyanka—which symbolizes his protective role as her brother.
“I request the people of Wayanad to look after my sister and protect her. She will dedicate her energy to addressing the issues faced by the community,” he stated, highlighting Priyanka’s commitment to the constituency. Rahul also assured the audience that, as the “unofficial MP,” he would continue to engage with local challenges and support his sister’s efforts.
Describing Priyanka’s resilience, he noted her significant role in caring for their family following the death of their father, Rajiv Gandhi. “She considers the people of Wayanad as her family,” he said, instilling confidence in her capability to serve.
Following the rally, Priyanka filed her nomination papers at the collectorate, accompanied by prominent Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. She is set to contest against LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri and BJP’s Navya Haridas in the by-election, scheduled for November 13.
Rahul’s emotional endorsement and Priyanka’s candidacy mark a pivotal moment for the Congress party in Wayanad as they aim to retain the seat.
