Gautam Gambhir Backs Aggressive Play Ahead of India-New Zealand Test Series

Bengaluru: As India prepares to face New Zealand in a three-match Test series starting Wednesday, head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed unwavering support for his team’s high-risk approach to batting. Following a record-breaking performance against Bangladesh, where India set multiple records for the fastest 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 in Test cricket, Gambhir emphasized the importance of aggression in the longer format.

“We want players to be aggressive and play their natural game,” Gambhir stated in a pre-series press conference. “If they can score 400 or 500 runs in a day, why hold them back? High risk brings high rewards, and while we may occasionally face setbacks, we’ll continue to back our players.”

India’s recent success, including a swift win against Bangladesh that sealed a 2-0 series victory, showcases their attacking mindset. However, Gambhir remains cautious about the challenge posed by New Zealand, who have not won a Test match in India since 1988. “New Zealand is a very professional unit with high-quality players who can capitalize on any opportunity,” he noted.

Gambhir also stressed the need for a focused and humble approach, urging the team to respect their opponents without fear. He highlighted the role of support staff in keeping players mentally sharp, whether batting or bowling first.

In his analysis of the game’s dynamics, Gambhir asserted that the current era favors bowlers over batters, urging a shift in the prevailing batter-centric mindset. “If a bowler takes 20 wickets, there’s a 99% chance of winning. We need to start recognizing the vital role bowlers play in securing victories,” he said.

Additionally, Gambhir expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to bounce back from a recent slump, reinforcing his belief in the seasoned batter’s talent and hunger for runs.

As the series approaches, all eyes will be on how India executes its aggressive strategy against a formidable New Zealand side.
