Renowned social activist Prof. Yogendra Yadav issued a cautionary statement regarding the present state of the Republic of India, highlighting a perceived threat to its democratic fabric and foundational values. Speaking at OU Arts College in Hyderabad on Saturday, April 27, during a lecture titled “Challenges to Democracy and Constitutional Values,” Yadav expressed concerns over the actions of those in positions of power, alleging a systematic erosion of democratic principles and the socio-economic framework envisioned by the nation’s founders.
Yadav specifically cited recent remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during election rallies, where he allegedly categorized Muslim minorities, constituting a significant portion of the population, as “infiltrators.” Questioning the alignment of such rhetoric with constitutional principles, Yadav posited that such statements contradicted the ethos enshrined in the Constitution.
Drawing parallels with the evolution of republics in the western world, Yadav suggested that India’s first republic had reached its conclusion. He underscored his argument by pointing to recent developments in electoral processes, including the sudden resignation of an election commissioner and subsequent appointments, which he perceived as undermining the integrity of democratic procedures.
Yadav likened the current electoral landscape to a rigged sports match, where rules are altered to favor one side, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness. He also criticized the alleged targeting of opposition leaders and parties through tactics such as income tax investigations and arrests.
Regarding wealth distribution and economic justice, Yadav echoed sentiments expressed by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, emphasizing the constitutional imperative of socio-economic and political equity. He highlighted disparities in wealth ownership and caste dynamics, urging for greater social equality.
Reflecting on the failure to popularize constitutional awareness over the past three decades, Yadav called for renewed efforts to educate the populace about constitutional values to safeguard them for future generations. He urged citizens to actively engage in defending the republic by promoting awareness and accountability, emphasizing the importance of collective action in upholding democratic ideals.
