New Delhi: David Warner, the veteran batsman, bid farewell to his illustrious 15-year international cricket career following Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh expressed heartfelt sentiments for his ex-IPL captain.
Warner and Singh were teammates at Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL from 2016 to 2017, where Warner also led the franchise to its maiden title.
Warner phased out his international career gradually, playing his final ODI during Australia’s successful 2023 campaign in India and concluding his Test career against Pakistan in early 2024.
His last match in the Australian jersey, against India, ended on a disappointing note as he scored six runs from six balls before edging a delivery from Arshdeep Singh to slip, where Suryakumar Yadav executed a low catch. Frustrated, Warner punched his bat with his right hand before leaving the field with bowed head, without any formal recognition.
“No one likes a quiet goodbye, but that’s the game of life, mate. Well done on an incredible career @davidwarner31!” Yuvraj wrote in ‘X’.
“From dominating the cricket field to embracing Bollywood with equal flair, you’ve exemplified true #Warner style. A formidable batsman, a spirited teammate, and an entertainer both on and off the pitch.
“It was a pleasure sharing the dressing room with you, buddy. Farewell #legend, and may you enjoy your well-earned time off with your wonderful family,” he added.
Beyond international cricket, Warner enjoyed a prolific T20 franchise career, particularly in the IPL, where in 2021, he became only the fourth batsman to surpass 10,000 runs in T20 cricket.
