President Biden’s administration has made it clear on Wednesday that the United States is in favor of reforms in the United Nations affiliates, including the Security Council. It is known that billionaire Elon Musk recently mentioned India’s non-permanent membership in UNSC. Reacting to this, Vedant Patel, spokesperson of the superpower’s foreign ministry, made comments on this.
President Biden previously spoke in the House of Representatives on reforms in the United Nations. The foreign minister also supported it. We are always in favor of reforms in UN bodies including the Security Council. ‘Representation in the UN should reflect the 21st century world,’ said Vedant Patel in a media conference.
Elon Musk commented on an occasion in January that India’s lack of permanent membership in the UNSC is absurd. The country with the largest population was blamed for not being represented. He said that there is a need for all African countries to be represented together. India has been demanding for a long time that there is a need for permanent membership in the Security Council to protect the interests of developing countries. It is remarkable that the international community is also supporting this.
A total of 15 countries have membership in UNSC. Among these, China, UK, France, Russia and America have veto power in the name of permanent membership. Another ten countries will be elected as temporary members for a period of two years. It is known that BJP has promised in the recently released manifesto that they will take steps for permanent membership in the United Nations.
