PM Modi Arrives in Mauritius for Key Two-Day Visit to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port Louis on Tuesday morning for a significant two-day visit to Mauritius, aimed at deepening bilateral relations between the two nations. Upon his arrival at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, he was given a warm ceremonial welcome by Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
Indian diaspora members gathered in large numbers outside the Oberoi Hotel in Port Louis to greet the Prime Minister, reflecting the strong ties between the two nations.
PM Modi is set to be the Chief Guest at the National Day celebrations of Mauritius on March 12, a role he has been invited for by Prime Minister Ramgoolam. This visit holds special significance as it marks PM Modi’s first trip to Mauritius since his 2015 visit, during which he unveiled India’s Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), emphasizing the importance of cooperation in the Indian Ocean.
The Prime Minister’s visit includes meetings with the President of Mauritius, Dharam Gokhool, as well as discussions with Prime Minister Ramgoolam and other key officials. Modi is also scheduled to meet leaders from various political parties and members of the Indian-origin community in Mauritius, a group that plays a vital role in the country’s social and cultural fabric.
As part of the visit, PM Modi will inaugurate two key infrastructure projects funded by India — the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre. These projects reflect India’s continued support for Mauritius’ development.
PM Modi’s visit is expected to yield the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), aimed at bolstering cooperation in maritime security, healthcare, small and medium enterprises, trade, and capacity building. These agreements align with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, focused on fostering stronger ties with its regional partners.
A highlight of the National Day celebrations will be the participation of Indian Defence forces. An Indian Navy contingent, alongside an Indian Navy ship, will participate in the event. Additionally, an Indian Navy helicopter, the Akash Ganga Skydiving Team from the Indian Air Force, and NCC cadets will showcase their skills during the festivities.
The visit is also expected to mark the signing of a technical agreement for sharing white-shipping information between the Indian Navy and Mauritian authorities, which is set to enhance Mauritius’ maritime security and regional cooperation.
Both countries are also set to discuss measures to combat cross-border financial crimes and enhance bilateral trade.
The visit reaffirms the enduring diplomatic and strategic partnership between India and Mauritius, with both nations working toward greater collaboration in development and regional security. High-level engagement between the two countries has been consistent, with Mauritius being a key participant in several of PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremonies and a special invitee at the G20 Summit in 2023.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Mauritius is a clear demonstration of India’s continued commitment to strengthening its ties with the Indian Ocean region and advancing mutual interests.
