T20 World Cup 2024:
Afghanistan has stormed into the Super-8 stage from Group C in the T20 World Cup, joining host West Indies in the final phase. Afghanistan currently tops their group after a stunning victory over Papua New Guinea, which saw New Zealand exit the tournament. The last two matches for the group are now merely formalities, with Uganda and Papua New Guinea facing off. The top spot in the group will be decided by the outcome of the Afghanistan vs. West Indies match.
Gulbadin Naib Shines
Batting first, Papua New Guinea was bowled out for a mere 95 runs in 19.5 overs. Kiplin Doriga (27) was the only batter to put up some resistance. Afghan bowlers Farooqhi (3/16), Naveen ul Haq (2/4), and Noor Ahmed (1/14) dominated the innings. Despite losing three wickets in 15.1 overs, Afghanistan chased down the target with Gulbadin Naib (49*) anchoring the innings. Contributions from Omarzai (13) and Mohammed Nabi (16*) sealed the victory. Farooqui earned the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his exceptional bowling.
England Crush Oman to Keep Super-8 Hopes Alive
Defending champions England bounced back in their Group B match, crushing Oman to re-enter the ‘Super-8’ race. England bowled Oman out for a paltry 47 runs, then swiftly chased down the target, scoring 50 runs in just 3.1 overs. Captain Jos Buttler (24*: 4 fours, 1 six off 8 balls), Philip Salt (12: 2 sixes), and Jonny Bairstow (8*: 2 fours) led the aggressive chase. The bowlers, Adil Rashid (4/11), Mark Wood (3/12), and Jofra Archer (3/12), had earlier dismantled the Omani batting line-up.
England’s net run rate received a significant boost (+3.081), and they now sit with 3 points from three matches. Their fate in the Super-8 hinges on the upcoming match against Namibia and the outcome of Scotland’s game against Australia. Scotland, currently second with a net run rate of +2.164 and 5 points, still has a chance, but Australia’s advancement with 6 points is already confirmed.
The T20 World Cup continues to thrill with nail-biting finishes and remarkable performances, setting the stage for an electrifying Super-8 round.
