TDP+ Government Reverses Controversial Liquor Policy, Promises Quality and Affordable Options
In a significant policy shift, the newly formed TDP+ government in Andhra Pradesh has decided to overhaul the controversial liquor policy implemented by Jagan Mohan Reddy’s administration. Initially introduced in 2019, Jagan’s policy led to a dramatic increase in liquor prices and was criticized for allowing contaminated products to reach consumers.
Under Jagan’s regime, the minimum price for even lower-quality liquor was set above Rs 200, and premium brands saw their prices nearly double. The policy faced widespread criticism for its impact on consumers and the quality of products available.
The new policy, set to be implemented from October, marks a departure from these practices. It aims to ensure that only quality liquor is sold at reasonable prices across Andhra Pradesh. Notably, the new policy will reintroduce several liquor brands priced under Rs 100, which had previously been sidelined.
Government officials, along with representatives from the excise department and liquor companies, have been engaged in discussions to finalize the details of the new policy. The focus is on making quality liquor accessible at more affordable rates, thereby addressing the concerns of both consumers and industry stakeholders.
This policy reversal reflects a more consumer-friendly approach, contrasting sharply with the previous administration’s measures, which were seen as both punitive and controversial.
