An ambulance driver transporting a critically ill five-month-old baby to the hospital was assaulted by three individuals after overtaking their SUV. The incident occurred on Sunday evening as John Mathew was en route to Vani Vilas Hospital from Tumkuru, with the infant receiving oxygen support. According to police reports, the ambulance inadvertently brushed against the SUV while passing it.
The occupants of the SUV, identified as Yuvaraj Singh, Manjunath, and Lateesh, began honking persistently until both vehicles reached the Neelamgala toll gate. Upon slowing down, the three men exited their vehicle and allegedly verbally abused and physically assaulted Mathew, despite pleas from the infant’s parents to let them proceed.
The altercation escalated into a disturbance on the roadway until a patrolling police car intervened, diffusing the situation and allowing the ambulance to continue its journey. Mathew promptly filed a complaint at the Nelamangala Rural police station, leading to the subsequent arrest of the three men. They were found intoxicated and have been charged with offenses including drunk driving, assault, and causing public disturbance.
