Centre Approves Rs 3,295.76 Crore for Development of 40 Iconic Tourist Centres
New Delhi, Nov 29: The Central Government has approved an investment of Rs 3,295.76 crore for the development of 40 iconic tourist centres across 23 states, aiming to elevate them to global standards. This major step towards enhancing India’s tourism infrastructure was announced by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who highlighted that these projects would not only boost tourism but also support local economies and create jobs through sustainable tourism initiatives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for the initiative on X, emphasizing the transformative potential of tourism for the nation’s prosperity. He said, “Tourism has the potential to bring prosperity to the lives of many. Our government will keep focusing on enhancing India’s tourism infrastructure to ensure more people can experience the wonders of Incredible India.”
The approved projects will cover a diverse range of locations, from historic sites to eco-tourism destinations. Notable projects include the Gandikota Fort, Havelock Bridge, and Pushkaram Ghat in Andhra Pradesh, the Siang adventure and eco park in Arunachal Pradesh, and the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in Guwahati. Other significant initiatives are planned for the beautification of Rang Ghar at Sivasagar in Assam, ecotourism and cultural development at the Roerich and Devika Rani estate in Bengaluru, and the redevelopment of Umiam Lake in Shillong.
The scope of the projects extends to various innovative tourism concepts such as the creation of a bio-diversity hub in Kerala’s Ashtamudi backwaters, underwater tourism in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg, and a rafting base station in Rishikesh. The developments will also focus on integrating advanced technologies, sustainable practices, and fostering public-private partnerships to enhance both infrastructure and the overall visitor experience.
Minister Shekhawat underscored the goal of these projects under the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme: to create world-class tourism destinations that showcase India’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage. These projects are expected to decongest popular tourist spots and provide a more enriched experience for visitors.
With an emphasis on sustainability and job creation, the tourism sector in India is set to gain a major boost, ensuring that the country’s diverse heritage is showcased to the world at the highest standards.
