Hugo Weaving Picks Favorite Cricketers from India and Australia in Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Panaji, Nov 25: Renowned British actor Hugo Weaving, famous for his iconic roles in The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings, and V for Vendetta, took a break from his usual work at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to share his thoughts on the ongoing Border–Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.
While attending the prestigious festival in Goa, where his film The Rooster was screened in the Australia Focus section, Hugo spoke with IANS and expressed his admiration for key players from both teams. Although he admitted to not closely following the ongoing series, Hugo humorously acknowledged India’s strong performance, stating, “India has absolutely thrashed the Australian cricket team.”
When asked about his favourite cricketers, Hugo picked Jasprit Bumrah from the Indian team, calling him a “pretty handy player.” For Australia, he highlighted Pat Cummins, the Australian captain and fast bowler, for his rare and impressive position as both a leader and a key bowler on the field. Hugo also appreciated the competitiveness of the two fast-bowler captains, noting the rarity of such a matchup.
Looking forward, Hugo optimistically hoped for a better performance from the Australian team in the upcoming tests, but jokingly acknowledged that if India completes a series whitewash, “good on you,” while Australia would need to return to the drawing board.
Hugo Weaving, who has won six Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA), is an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia.
