Jay Shah Poised to Become ICC Chairman as Greg Barclay Announces Departure
New Delhi: Jay Shah, a prominent figure in international cricket and current BCCI General Secretary, is positioned to become the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah’s influential role has solidified India’s position as a dominant force in global cricket governance, and his potential appointment marks a significant shift in the sport’s administration.
Greg Barclay, the current ICC Chairman, has announced via video conference his decision to step down from the role. Barclay, who has served since November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022, will conclude his term at the end of November. His departure comes amid a $4.46 billion dispute between the ICC and its major broadcast rights holder, Star, as reported by The Age.
Shah is reported to have secured backing from key cricketing nations, including Australia and England, strengthening his bid for the position. According to an ICC spokesperson, nominations for the next chairman must be submitted by August 27, 2024, with an election held if multiple candidates are proposed. The new chairman’s term will begin on December 1, 2024.
In the past, only Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012) have held the role of ICC chairman from India. Shah’s tenure as BCCI General Secretary will end in 2025, after which he is subject to a mandatory three-year cooling-off period.
To be elected ICC Chairman, a candidate must secure at least nine votes out of the 16-member board, representing a majority of 51%.
