New Delhi: Sunita Kejriwal, the spouse of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, voiced her concerns on Sunday regarding his pre-election incarceration, alleging it as an attempt to suppress his political influence. Encouraging citizens to oppose what she characterized as “dictatorship,” she called for active participation in the upcoming polls scheduled for later this month in the national capital.
Conducting her third public rally in support of AAP candidate Sahiram Pahalwan, Sunita led a procession in south Delhi. The locality was adorned with AAP insignias, and residents displayed banners expressing solidarity with Kejriwal.
Addressing the crowd from the sunroof of her vehicle during the Deoli roadshow, Sunita highlighted her husband’s absence, currently detained in jail, and her assumption of responsibility for the AAP’s electoral campaign. She recently led similar rallies in East Delhi and West Delhi constituencies.
Attributing Kejriwal’s incarceration to his initiatives in establishing quality government schools, neighborhood clinics, and advocating for financial empowerment of Delhi’s women, Sunita asserted, “He has been put in jail just before polls to stifle his voice so that it doesn’t reach you.”
Emphasizing the achievements of Kejriwal’s governance, including uninterrupted electricity supply, Sunita lambasted his opponents for what she described as a politically motivated imprisonment during the electoral process.
Asserting Kejriwal’s resilience, she stated, “Kejriwal is a lion and no one can bend or break him,” while cautioning against what she perceived as a burgeoning authoritarianism endangering democracy.
Encouraging electoral participation, she urged voters to support the AAP candidate, emphasizing the significance of their ballots in resisting what she termed “dictatorship.”
Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in connection with a case related to money laundering linked with excise policy. He remains in judicial custody in Tihar Jail. Voting for seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi is scheduled for May 25.
Sunita lamented the prolonged detention of her husband without a verdict, criticizing the legal process and invoking concerns about his health, particularly regarding his diabetes management.
Describing Kejriwal as a principled individual dedicated to public service, Sunita recounted his history of activism and sacrifices, including hunger strikes for social justice.
She further revealed challenges in accessing medical treatment for Kejriwal while incarcerated, highlighting concerns about his deteriorating health and the need for intervention to ensure his well-being.
