BRS Condemns Arrests of Farmers Demanding Loan Waivers in Telangana
Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) strongly condemned the arrest of farmers who called for a ‘Chalo Praja Bhavan’ protest, urging the Telangana government to fulfill its promise of a farm loan waiver. BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) expressed outrage over the arrests, describing them as an “atrocious act” and questioning whether farmers were being treated as “thieves and terrorists.”
KTR alleged that farmers and leaders of agricultural unions were unlawfully detained and held in police stations across the state since the previous night. He reported that BRS had received multiple complaints about police visiting farmers’ homes to apprehend them, calling for an immediate end to such undemocratic actions.
“The families of these farmers are deeply concerned due to the police arrests,” KTR stated, demanding the unconditional release of all those detained. He further questioned the Chief Minister’s fear of the farmers, asking, “Why are there so many restrictions on farmers?”
Highlighting the ongoing unrest, KTR noted that the farmers’ protest is a response to the Congress party’s failure to honor its election promise to waive crop loans of up to Rs 2 lakh. He emphasized that this grassroots movement is independent of any political party, asserting that farmers are united in their demands and that the Congress government will ultimately have to answer to their collective power.
The BRS has criticized the state government for not fully implementing the announced loan waivers, claiming that many farmers are still burdened by unpaid loans. In response, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that the government had deposited Rs 18,000 crore into the accounts of 22 lakh farmers to waive their loans. He acknowledged ongoing challenges but assured that the government is committed to resolving these issues to ensure all eligible farmers receive the promised benefits.
As tensions rise, the BRS is poised to continue advocating for farmers’ rights, insisting that their grievances will not be ignored.
