New Delhi: Amidst controversy surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical undergraduates and the cancellation of UGC-NET due to concerns regarding integrity, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has called for a parliamentary discussion on NEET. Emphasizing the importance of a respectful dialogue, Gandhi urged Prime Minister and fellow parliamentarians to engage constructively on this critical issue concerning the youth.

“We convened yesterday and unanimously agreed on the necessity for a parliamentary debate on the NEET issue today. This discussion is pivotal for our youth and must be conducted with utmost respect and seriousness,” Gandhi stated to ANI ahead of the session.

Tensions rose in the Lok Sabha as opposition members, led by Rahul Gandhi, pushed for immediate deliberations on NEET. However, Speaker Om Birla prioritized the Motion of Thanks to President’s Address for discussion.

“We sought to convey a unified message to India’s students, underscoring the gravity of this issue. Hence, we proposed a dedicated discussion on NEET today,” Gandhi remarked.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party MP Sandeep Pathak condemned the NEET irregularities, highlighting concerns over paper leaks, marking discrepancies, and institutional integrity. He stressed the accountability of the National Testing Agency (NTA), Union Education Minister, and the Prime Minister in addressing these issues.

In the Rajya Sabha, similar disruptions ensued as members sought attention on the NEET matter, leading to an adjournment until noon.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently initiated a criminal investigation into alleged irregularities during the NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams, prompting nationwide scrutiny. The NEET (UG) 2024 exam, conducted on May 5, 2024, witnessed participation from over 23 lakh candidates across numerous test centers worldwide, with an unprecedented 67 candidates achieving perfect scores.

In response to the controversies, the Ministry of Education has established a high-level committee tasked with proposing reforms to enhance examination processes, bolster data security protocols, and improve the functioning of the NTA.
