In the past, Hyderabad and Secunderabad were renowned for producing top-tier sports athletes across various disciplines including football, volleyball, badminton, hockey, cycling, boxing, and cricket. However, the region’s sporting prowess has seen a decline with only a handful of athletes now competing at elite levels. The youth of the twin cities appear to lack the ambition and drive necessary for excelling in sports.
Amidst this backdrop, individuals like Maxwell Trevor, former national cycling champion, have emerged as stalwarts committed to rejuvenating sports in Hyderabad. Following an illustrious career in cycling, Maxwell pursued higher education, earning a doctorate specializing in sports. He subsequently founded the Dr. Maxwell Trevor Cycling Welfare Association (MTCWA), dedicated to nurturing young talent and promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports.
Under Maxwell’s leadership, the MTCWA has cultivated a vibrant sports culture, attracting children and parents alike. The association provides access to both imported and domestic bicycles, fostering participation in various programs aimed at promoting physical fitness and sportsmanship.
Maxwell emphasizes the transformative impact of sports on underprivileged children, many of whom were vulnerable to societal challenges before finding purpose and structure through the MTCWA initiatives. Supported by sponsors, the association has acquired advanced equipment like Watt bikes, essential for precise fitness assessment and tailored training sessions.
Utilizing facilities such as the velodrome at Osmania University, Maxwell leverages his extensive network within the Cycling Federation of India and the Sports Authority of India to identify and nurture emerging talent. Beyond sports training, the MTCWA imparts holistic education on nutrition and healthy living, ensuring that young athletes are equipped with the knowledge needed for success both on and off the field.
Through collaborative efforts with experienced sports professionals and coaches, the MTCWA aims to empower its participants to excel in sports and lead fulfilling lives, setting a precedent for future generations in Hyderabad’s sporting community.
