Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish Takes Office as India’s Permanent Representative to the UN
United Nations: Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish has officially assumed his role as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, presenting his credentials to Secretary-General António Guterres. Following the ceremony on Monday, Harish immediately engaged with the Security Council, advocating for greater involvement of major troop-contributing countries in the decision-making processes related to peacekeeping operations.
In preparation for his tenure, which will prominently feature the upcoming UN summit beginning September 22 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation, Harish conducted extensive consultations with diplomats to discuss collaborative efforts on shared international issues.
On social media, Harish emphasized his commitment to enhancing and reforming multilateralism, both politically and economically, to address contemporary global challenges and leverage emerging opportunities. He assured Guterres of India’s dedication to advancing reformed multilateralism and revitalizing the UN under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
Harish also met with Philemon Yang, the incoming President of the General Assembly, pledging India’s support for his presidency. With 34 years of diplomatic experience, including recent service as the Ambassador to Germany, Harish’s extensive background spans regions from Southeast Asia to Europe and the US. Notably, he has served in areas of significant relevance to current UN issues, such as Gaza, where he was India’s representative and worked with the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine.
Upon starting his role, Harish paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the UN campus and subsequently held meetings with key UN officials, including General Assembly President Dennis Francis and Amandeep Singh Gill, the Secretary-General’s envoy on technology. Harish also engaged with representatives from Japan, Brazil, and Egypt to discuss strategic partnerships and collaborative efforts within the UN framework.
Harish’s proactive approach and diplomatic expertise are expected to contribute significantly to India’s role at the United Nations, particularly in areas of peacekeeping, reform, and international cooperation.
