Nirmala Sitharaman’s Saree Choice for Budget Presentation Stuns Again
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman once again made a striking statement with her attire while presenting the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha. Known for her consistent choice of handloom sarees, she maintained the tradition during this year’s budget presentation.
Sitharaman arrived at the Lok Sabha wearing a handwoven saree with intricate fish motifs, paired with a red blouse and matching shawl. The beige saree with a gold border was both elegant and symbolic. The special significance behind this year’s saree lies in its personal connection with renowned Madhubani artist Dulari Devi, whom Sitharaman met during her visit to Bihar. Dulari Devi, a Padma Shri awardee, had gifted Sitharaman the handwoven saree, requesting her to wear it for the budget presentation — a request that was honored.
This moment adds to a long tradition of meaningful sartorial choices by the Finance Minister. Over the years, she has showcased various handloom sarees, including the following:
- 2019: A pink handloom saree from Mangalagiri
- 2020: A mustard-gold saree with a blue border
- 2021: A red and beige Bhudan Pochampally saree
- 2022: A maroon handloom saree from Odisha
- 2023: A brown saree with a temple border in bright red
- 2024: A “Rama blue” saree, symbolizing the consecration of Lord Ram’s idol in Ayodhya
Each saree has not only added to her image as a symbol of grace and tradition but also highlighted India’s rich textile heritage. This year’s choice continues the theme of honoring India’s diverse handloom traditions while keeping in mind the personal significance tied to the garments she wears.
