New York: Enhanced Security Measures for T20 World Cup Clash Between India and Pakistan
New York’s Nassau County is implementing unprecedented security measures for the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan on June 9, in response to a potential terror threat, though state Governor Kathy Hochul has stated that the threat is not credible “at this time.”
The Eisenhower Park Stadium in Nassau County will host eight matches of the tournament, including three featuring the Indian team. Additionally, India will play a practice match against Bangladesh on June 1.
Governor Hochul has directed state police to heighten security protocols to ensure the safety of attendees.
“In preparation for the World Cup, my team has been working with federal and local law enforcement to keep attendees safe. While there is no credible threat at this time, I’ve directed @nyspolice (NYPD) to elevate security measures, and we’ll continue to monitor as the event nears,” Hochul announced on X.
According to CNN, New York officials are implementing safety precautions following a global threat from terror group ISIS-K earlier this year.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder confirmed that the event received an ISIS-K-linked threat in April, followed by specific threats targeting the India versus Pakistan match on June 9. A viral video circulating online has also called for a “lone wolf” attack.
“This is the largest security operation in this county’s history, and I can guarantee that the safest place to be in Nassau County on June 9 will be inside that stadium,” Ryder assured.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman described the event, expected to draw large crowds, as a “Super Bowl on steroids.”
“There will be teams and fans from all over the world coming to Nassau County. We have been meeting for over six months to address security and health care concerns that may arise at an event of this magnitude,” Blakeman stated.
Blakeman highlighted the county’s collaboration with federal partners, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, to ensure safety.
“We have taken numerous precautions to secure the stadium and the surrounding Eisenhower Park,” he added.
The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, will begin its campaign against Ireland on June 5, followed by the highly anticipated match against Pakistan on June 9, and will face hosts USA on June 12.
The terror threat was first disclosed by Trinidad’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley, prompting the ICC to assure that a robust security plan is in place.
“The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority. We have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place, working closely with authorities in our host countries to continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to mitigate any identified risks,” the ICC stated.
