Palestine Condemns Israeli Minister’s Remarks on Al-Aqsa Mosque

Gaza: Palestine has strongly condemned recent remarks by Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir concerning the construction of a synagogue within the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. This development has intensified regional tensions surrounding one of the most sensitive religious sites in the world.

On Monday, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for the Palestinian presidency, issued a firm statement rejecting any modifications to the status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, emphasizing that the mosque is a “red line” that must not be violated. This statement, conveyed through the official news agency WAFA, underscored the Palestinian position that such actions would be unacceptable and could provoke significant unrest.

Abu Rudeineh accused Ben-Gvir of attempting to incite a “religious war” and urged the international community, particularly the U.S. administration, to take decisive action against the Israeli government’s provocations. The Palestinian leadership called for adherence to the existing legal and historical status quo regarding the holy site.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, also known as the Temple Mount to Jews, is a focal point of religious significance and has historically been a flashpoint for conflict between Muslims and Jews. The current status quo permits non-Muslim visitors to tour the site but prohibits them from praying there.

In an interview with Israeli Army Radio, Ben-Gvir asserted that Jews should be permitted to pray on the Temple Mount and suggested that under his tenure, there would be no distinction between Jews and Muslims in accessing the site. He also stated that if given the choice, he would place an Israeli flag at the site and confirmed he would support the construction of a synagogue there.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has attempted to quell concerns by asserting that there is no change in the status quo at the Temple Mount. However, Ben-Gvir’s repeated visits and controversial statements have drawn severe criticism, further straining relations between the two communities.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, administered by Jordan but controlled by Israeli security forces, remains a contentious and highly sensitive area. Ben-Gvir’s statements and actions continue to exacerbate tensions, with the international community watching closely for further developments.
