PM Modi Highlights Importance of National Voters’ Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasized the significance of National Voters’ Day, calling it a celebration of India’s vibrant democracy. In a post on social media platform X, he urged every citizen to exercise their right to vote and stressed how crucial participation is in shaping the future of the nation.
“National Voters’ Day is about celebrating our vibrant democracy and empowering every citizen to exercise their right to vote,” PM Modi wrote. He also recognized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its exemplary work in strengthening the democratic process.
Observed on January 25 every year, National Voters’ Day commemorates the establishment of the ECI. The day holds special significance as it marks the foundation of the commission, and Prime Minister Modi reflected on the historical context of India’s democracy. He recalled how doubts were raised about the sustainability of democracy in India during the first general elections in 1951-1952.
“Some people were sceptical, whether the country’s democracy will survive,” PM Modi said, but added that India’s democracy had proven those doubts wrong. “India is the mother of democracy,” he asserted.
The Prime Minister lauded the consistent modernization efforts by the Election Commission, highlighting its use of technology to enhance the electoral process. He congratulated the ECI for its commitment to conducting fair elections.
PM Modi also appealed to citizens to actively participate in the democratic process, urging them to vote in large numbers. “I urge the countrymen to vote in large numbers and participate in the country’s democratic processes and also strengthen this process,” he said in a video post during his “Mann ki Baat” radio show.
National Voters’ Day, celebrated since 2011, aims to encourage and maximize voter enrollment, especially among new voters. The day serves as a reminder to citizens of the importance of informed participation in the electoral process.
