PM Modi Engages in Diplomatic Discussions with US and ASEAN Leaders in Laos
New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday during the ASEAN-India Summit in Laos, where he extended condolences for the lives lost due to Hurricane Milton in the United States. The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation on regional issues, underscoring the robust diplomatic relationship between India and the US.
The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to addressing global and regional challenges collaboratively. This engagement reflects India’s strategic partnership with the US, which continues to evolve in response to shifting geopolitical landscapes.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi also held bilateral discussions with leaders from Japan and New Zealand. He congratulated newly-appointed Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, expressing confidence in Japan’s leadership and reiterating India’s commitment to prioritizing its relationship with Japan as a trusted friend and strategic ally.
Additionally, PM Modi met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, marking their inaugural meeting. The Prime Minister welcomed New Zealand’s decision to join the International Solar Alliance and extended an invitation for Luxon to visit India, which the New Zealand leader accepted.
During the summit, PM Modi emphasized that the 21st century belongs to Asia, specifically highlighting the importance of collaboration between India and ASEAN nations. He remarked, “In a world marked by conflict and tension, the friendship and cooperation between India and ASEAN are essential.”
To bolster this partnership, PM Modi announced a comprehensive 10-point plan aimed at enhancing connectivity and resilience, aligned with Laos’ theme as the 2024 ASEAN Chair. This initiative, celebrating a decade of the ‘Act East’ policy, focuses on improving physical, digital, cultural, and spiritual connectivity while enhancing cyber, disaster, supply chain, health, and climate resilience.
As these diplomatic engagements unfold, they signify a strengthened commitment to fostering cooperation and partnership in an increasingly complex global environment.
