New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has resigned from his Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala while retaining his Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh, the Lok Sabha Secretariat announced on Tuesday.
A bulletin from the Lok Sabha confirmed that his resignation has been accepted, effective from June 18.
Addressing the matter, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Monday that after extensive discussions with the party’s top leadership at his residence in the national capital, a decision had been made regarding the two seats.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi’s sister, will make her electoral debut by contesting the Wayanad by-election.
Following Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from one of the two seats he won, the Congress’ representation in the Lower House is now 98 members.
The Wayanad seat will be the first constituency to undergo a by-election in the 18th Lok Sabha.
“Shri Rahul Gandhi, an elected member of Lok Sabha from two constituencies, Wayanad in Kerala and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, has resigned from his Wayanad parliamentary seat. His resignation has been accepted by the Speaker, effective June 18,” the bulletin stated.
