Supreme Court Dismisses Plea for Resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister

New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India rejected a plea seeking the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in response to the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The bench, consisting of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra, criticized the petitioner’s approach and clarified that the Court is not the appropriate forum for addressing such demands. The plea had requested the Court to mandate the resignation of Chief Minister Banerjee due to the incident.

During the proceedings, the bench emphasized the importance of maintaining the Court’s role within the boundaries of legal discipline rather than political matters. Chief Justice Chandrachud underscored, “This is not a political forum. We are here to address legal grievances, not to pass judgments on political figures.”

The bench’s comments reflected a clear distinction between legal responsibilities and political issues, reinforcing the judiciary’s role in adjudicating legal matters rather than engaging in political affairs. The Court’s decision underscores its commitment to adhering to its judicial mandate without venturing into political domains.
