Supreme Court to Hear Case on Rape and Murder of Junior Doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday. The case, titled “Alleged Rape and Murder Incident of a Trainee Doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and Related Issues,” will be addressed by a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, alongside Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
The Supreme Court’s intervention follows numerous letter petitions urging immediate judicial oversight and an impartial investigation into the incident. One such petition, filed by Monica Singh—a doctor represented by advocate Satayam Singh—has called for a thorough and unbiased probe. It also seeks guidelines to enhance security at medical institutions nationwide and the formulation of comprehensive measures to protect medical professionals.
The petition asserts that the attack on R.G. Kar Medical College is not an isolated act of violence but a significant assault on the nation’s healthcare system. It emphasizes the need for swift and decisive action by the Supreme Court to restore faith in the rule of law and to ensure the continued safe operation of medical institutions.
In related developments, former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, has been undergoing extended interrogation at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Salt Lake, Kolkata. Dr. Ghosh has been questioned for 13 to 14 hours daily over the past four days. The CBI is also investigating whether the attempted renovation of a room adjacent to the seminar hall on August 13, shortly after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe, was conducted under Dr. Ghosh’s instructions.
