Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling on Sub-Classification of SCs and STs
Hyderabad – Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday expressed his approval of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that empowers states to implement sub-classifications within the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) categories for better targeting of quotas.
In his address to the Assembly, Reddy highlighted that the Telangana government was a staunch advocate for this sub-classification, which was strongly argued in the Apex Court. He thanked the Supreme Court’s constitution bench, noting that six out of seven judges supported the state governments’ authority to pursue sub-classifications. Reddy announced that Telangana would be the first state to implement this ruling and indicated that an ordinance might be introduced if necessary to include sub-classifications in current job notifications.
BRS Working President KT Rama Rao also praised the Supreme Court’s decision, affirming that the BRS party had consistently supported sub-classification, contrasting their commitment with other political parties’ focus on vote bank politics. Rama Rao urged the state government to implement the sub-classification promptly and assured the party’s support for this initiative.
The Supreme Court’s seven-judge constitution bench, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, ruled by a 6:1 majority that states are permitted to further sub-classify SCs and STs to ensure more effective quota distribution among the more disadvantaged groups within these categories. This decision is expected to have significant implications for the implementation of affirmative action policies across various states.
