Hyderabad: The commission led by Justice Narasimha Reddy, appointed to investigate irregularities in power purchase agreements made by the previous Telangana government under the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) regime, has issued a formal notice to former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) requesting detailed clarification regarding his involvement in these agreements.
The commission has set a deadline of June 15 for KCR to respond.
In his response, KCR has sought an extension until July 30 to provide the necessary clarifications.
The investigation focuses on alleged irregularities in the PPAs during the BRS administration, particularly concerning agreements related to the Yadadri and Damarcherla power plants, as well as a proposed 1,000 MW power purchase from Chhattisgarh.
Former officials, including D Prabhakar Rao, former chairman and managing director of Telangana Genco and Transco, and Suresh Chanda, former special chief secretary, have already testified before the commission. Suresh Chanda was involved in the contentious proposal for power procurement from Chhattisgarh during his tenure in the energy department.
The Justice Narasimha Reddy commission has also cautioned that if KCR’s response to the investigation into potential irregularities in these PPAs is deemed unsatisfactory, further steps, including a personal appearance process, will be initiated.
The commission continues to investigate these agreements and plans to issue notices to other relevant officials as part of its ongoing inquiry.
Established on April 7, 2024, the commission is mandated to submit its report within 100 days. Justice Narasimha Reddy has pledged impartiality in the investigation, irrespective of political affiliations, and assured the public of a timely report, underscoring the importance of public input in the process.
