New Delhi: Renowned actress Shabana Azmi extended her support to actor-politician Kangana Ranaut on Saturday following an alleged altercation with a CISF woman constable, emphasizing that security personnel should adhere strictly to legal protocols.
Ranaut, in a recent video statement, claimed she was physically assaulted and verbally abused by the constable during a security screening at Chandigarh airport.
In a statement on X platform, Azmi expressed her stance: “While I may not share a close bond with Kangana Ranaut, I cannot endorse the celebrations surrounding ‘the slap’. If security personnel overstep their bounds, it jeopardizes safety for all.”
Azmi’s husband, veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar, has filed a defamation suit against Ranaut, pertaining to allegations made by her. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
In her video, Ranaut alleged mistreatment by the CISF constable, suggesting it stemmed from differences in opinion, particularly concerning her views on the farmer protests, during the security check at Chandigarh airport.
The incident occurred shortly after Ranaut’s recent election to the Lok Sabha from Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh.
Following the incident, the accused CISF personnel, Kulwinder Kaur, has been suspended pending investigation. The CISF, responsible for airport security, has initiated a formal inquiry into the matter.
